Scholarships
"As a senior in high school, all I knew about mining came from the seven dwarves. Facing the very expensive life changes of entering college and becoming a wife and step-mother all at the same time, I went looking for scholarships. I was chosen as a Kennecott Scholar and thus my eyes were opened to the world of mining. My passions were science and the outdoors, so I decided to give mining engineering a try. Four more kids, and I won’t say how many years later, I have received my Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Utah, and I have now worked for Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper for more than five years, holding positions of Mine Technical Intern, Ore Control Engineer, Operations Supervisor, and Short Term Planning Engineer. I am grateful for the doors opened to me by the Kennecott Scholarship, and I am excited about the opportunities available to me through Rio Tinto." Premier Scholarships
Kennecott Premier Scholarships are awarded annually. Kennecott works with five local colleges and universities: University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah State University, Westminster College, and Weber State University. These scholarships provide prospective students with financial assistance and Kennecott with an effective tool to improve recruitment and encourage retention in disciplines related to our industry. Kennecott scholarships are renewable and continue through a student’s senior year, dependent on the student’s ability to continue to meet the criteria set forth for the scholarship.
Work-Study Scholarships
In 2006, Kennecott implemented a new Work-Study Scholarship Program to assist technical and maintenance craft students. The Work Study-Scholarship Program provided 18 scholarships to four technical, vocational, and community colleges in Utah. These disciplines are critical to keep Kennecott’s operations running at the highest caliber. Participating schools include: Davis Area Technical College, Utah Valley State University, Salt Lake Community College, Ogden/Weber Applied Technology College, and Salt Lake Tooele Applied Technology College.
