Rio Tinto Kennecott developing new Bingham Canyon Mine Visitor Experience

(September 18, 2018)

Rio Tinto Kennecott is preparing a new visitor experience at the Bingham Canyon Mine, planned to open in Spring 2019. This will be the first time visitors will be able to visit the mine since the Bingham Canyon Mine visitor’s center closed five years ago as a result of a landslide.

Rio Tinto Kennecott Managing Director Marc Cameron said, “We are pleased to begin introducing the new Bingham Canyon Mine visitor experience ahead of our full launch in spring of next year. It is important for us to connect the community with our business by showing them how we pioneer human progress and make modern life possible.”

Currently, Kennecott is completing exhibit installations and testing a new reservation system, parking and shuttles in preparation for the spring opening. The new experience will require visitors to reserve tickets online in advance, park below the mine and ride Kennecott shuttles, which are ADA compliant, to the mine overlook.

New outdoor exhibits will be part of the updated visitor experience as will some of the most popular attractions from the previous visitor’s center, which includes an iconic haul truck tire that was highlighted in generations of family photos.

Kennecott is also installing items that the public rarely gets a chance to see or touch that were not available at the previous visitor’s center. New exhibits will include a haul truck bed and shovel scoop that guests can walk inside, a replica historic mine tunnel, and working geotechnical monitoring equipment. The visitor experience will also repurpose historic mining equipment and displays.

Before opening in the spring, Kennecott will add an interpretive nature trail and exhibits about the mine’s history and the way its elements – copper, silver, gold, and molybdenum – are used in modern life.

As before, admissions will be donated to the Bingham Canyon Mine Foundation to support local charities, and the Copperton Lion’s Club has reopened a Bingham Canyon Mine gift shop in the visitor experience
parking lot.

Kennecott plans to host a grand opening event in the spring 2019 and will provide more information about the new visitor experience at that time.
