Power plant repowering
Proposed changes to current Kennecott Utah Copper power plant
Kennecott Utah Copper is proposing to replace three coal-fired boilders with one larger turbine and boiler fueled by natural gas.
Significant improvements in efficiency
Repowering meets increased loads with greater efficiency and self supply diversity. Investment in this new technology means greater energy effiency (taking units 1-3 from 26% to 49% efficiency), which nearly doubles the power generation efficiency of repowered units.
Change in supply mix
With the addition of the refinery CHP, Kennecott's power supply from alternative and high-efficiency power sources is now at 13%. When the molybdenum autoclave process facility combined heat and power unit comes online in 2012, Kennecott's power supply from alternative and high-efficiency power sources will be at 16%.

Proposed changes in emissions with repowering
Repowering units 1, 2 & 3 significantly reduces GHG intensity and criteria pollutants.
