Rio Tinto Kennecott's growth and improvement projects
Rio Tinto Kennecott is investing in the future as we extend the life of the Bingham Canyon Mine into the next decade. This investment and work will keep the mine operating productively and efficiently, and will allow Kennecott to maintain production for years to come.
To extend the life of the mine and reach an additional 700 million tons of ore resource, we are pushing back the south wall of the Bingham Canyon Mine 1,000 feet and deepening it 300 feet.
We have updated a number of existing air, water and land permits allowing us to move and crush more rock and store more tailings to produce the same amount of copper. As a heavily regulated company, these approvals will keep the operation active for decades.
