Rio Tinto Stadium

Beginning in 2008, Rio Tinto Kennecott purchased naming rights for Rio Tinto stadium. This stadium hosts Real Salt Lake, Utah’s Major League Soccer team. Kennecott's investment in the stadium provides the opportunity to be involved in youth education and sports programs in the Salt Lake area. This sponsorship is a unique opportunity to educate the larger community about Kennecott and enables us to engage with the community in sustainable development practices.

Natural History Museum of Utah

The Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) at the Rio Tinto Center opened on November 18, 2011. The building's exterior is adorned with 42,000 square feet of copper from the Bingham Canyon Mine. The copper surface was part of a $15-million investment made by Kennecott in 2008, which supported construction of the new location for the educational facility.

The donation continues a long partnership with the museum to create educational opportunities for students and visitors worldwide to learn about the natural sciences and our shared commitment for sustainable development. As the museum’s founding sustainability partner, Kennecott collaborated to create a “sustainability trail,” one of several internal road maps that guide visitors through the galleries. This trail features exhibits and activities on how to create a more sustainable environment. It also addresses topics on geologic resources, water use and climate change.

The Rio Tinto Center houses the museum located along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in upper Research Park near the University of Utah. The Rio Tinto Center construction met Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building standards. Our employees consulted on safety with the building’s contractor, Big D Construction. More than 750,000 hours were worked without an injury. Big D Construction has adopted many of Kennecott's safety processes in its own practices.

Kennecott actively partners with local charities to support projects that promote a mutual long-term benefit to the community near our operation. These partnerships and programs are aligned with our business plan and are part of our sustainable development commitment that focuses on community engagement, education, environment and energy.
